Remember when hanging out with friends, listening to music, and having nowhere in particular to be was enough? Maybe it’s time to bring a little of that feeling back.
There was a time when life seemed a little simpler.
You had your friends, your favorite music, maybe an old car, and no idea where the night would take you.
You didn’t need reservations, an itinerary, or a calendar reminder telling you when to have fun.
You just lived.
If you’ve ever watched the 1993 cult classic Dazed and Confused, you probably remember that feeling. The movie captured something special about growing up in the 1970s: freedom, friendships, long summer nights, and the wonderful art of doing absolutely nothing.
And, of course, one unforgettable line:
“You just gotta keep livin’, man. L-I-V-I-N.”
Now, a few decades later, maybe those words mean even more.
Because we’re grown-ups now.
We’ve got jobs, mortgages, responsibilities, families, bills, and phones that never seem to stop buzzing.
Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to just hang out.
Maybe it’s time to remember.
Remember When Doing Nothing Was Everything?
Think back to those summer nights.
A few friends sitting around, talking about everything and nothing.
Someone playing music.
Someone telling a story you’ve already heard a hundred times.
Nobody checking the clock.
Nobody asking what we’re doing next.
We weren’t trying to be productive. We weren’t worried about tomorrow’s email or Monday’s meeting.
We were just enjoying being there.
That’s the feeling we’re talking about.
And it’s something you can still find when you pull your RV into Ocean City’s Coastal Escape RV Park, put out a couple of chairs, and settle in for an evening by the fire.
No agenda required.
Dazed and Confused, but With Better Camping Chairs
Let’s face it. We’re not teenagers anymore.
Our backs might remind us of that every morning.
We appreciate a comfortable mattress, good coffee, and knowing exactly where the bathroom is.
And instead of driving around all night looking for something to do, we might be perfectly happy sitting next to a campfire doing absolutely nothing.
Funny how that works.
Back then, we couldn’t wait to get out of the house.
Now, we bring our little house with us.
That’s one of the beautiful things about RV camping.
You still get that sense of freedom, only now you’ve got a refrigerator, your favorite pillow, and a comfortable place to sleep.
You can spend an afternoon exploring Ocean City, enjoy dinner outside, and return to your campsite as the evening settles in.
Then you pull up a chair.
Put your feet up.
And let the fire do its thing.
The Best Nights Don’t Always Have a Plan
There’s something almost magical about a campground after sunset.
The sky gets darker.
The air begins to cool.
Somewhere nearby, you hear laughter.
Someone’s cooking dinner.
Someone else is telling a story around the fire.
And for a little while, the rest of the world feels very far away.
Nobody needs you to answer an email.
Nobody cares about your to-do list.
You don’t have to accomplish anything.
You can just sit there with your spouse, your kids, your friends, or even by yourself and enjoy the moment.
Maybe you talk about the old days.
Maybe you play some classic rock.
Maybe you laugh about the ridiculous things you did when you were younger.
Or maybe you don’t say much at all.
That’s okay, too.
Sometimes the best part of camping is having absolutely nothing to do.
Put the Phone Down. The World Can Wait.
Remember when nobody could reach you unless you were home?
No text messages.
No social media notifications.
No constant stream of news.
If someone wanted to find you, they had to actually look for you.
Today, we carry the entire world around in our pockets.
And sometimes that world gets a little too loud.
Camping gives us a chance to turn down the volume.
You don’t have to throw your phone in the lake or completely disappear.
Just put it away for a little while.
Watch the flames.
Listen to the crickets.
Look up at the sky.
Have a real conversation with someone sitting three feet away.
You might be surprised how good that feels.
Your Kids Will Remember These Nights
Here’s something we understand better as we get older.
Time moves fast.
Really fast.
One day, you’re the teenager in Dazed and Confused, wondering what adventures lie ahead.
The next, you’re watching your own kids grow up, wondering where all those years went.
That’s why these little moments matter.
Your kids might not remember what you bought them for their birthday five years ago.
But they may remember sitting around a campground fire with you.
They’ll remember the stories.
The laughter.
The marshmallows that caught fire.
The night everyone stayed outside just a little longer because nobody wanted to go in.
They’ll remember that you were there.
And maybe years from now, when they’re grown and have families of their own, they’ll take their kids camping and do the same things.
Not because anyone told them to.
But because those memories meant something.
It’s Not Too Late for One More Camping Weekend
The 2026 camping season at Ocean City’s Coastal Escape RV Park runs from May 15 through October 25.
And even though the calendar says October, there’s still an opportunity to enjoy a getaway before the season closes.
You don’t need a week off.
You don’t need an elaborate vacation plan.
Sometimes a night or two away from the usual routine is exactly what you need.
Bring your RV.
Bring a sweatshirt for the cooler evenings.
Bring your favorite food for the grill.
And if you have a playlist filled with Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or some of those songs you used to play a little too loudly, even better.
Keep the music at a neighbor-friendly volume, of course.
We may be channeling the 1970s, but we’re grown-ups now.
Well, most of the time.
Maybe This Is What Livin’ Really Means
When you’re young, living means going somewhere.
Finding something new.
Staying out late.
Chasing the next adventure.
But as you get older, something changes.
You begin to realize that some of the best moments happen when you stop chasing anything at all.
A quiet morning with coffee outside your RV.
An afternoon with nowhere to be.
Dinner with people you love.
An evening watching a fire slowly burn down.
No big production.
No pressure to make every minute count.
Just the freedom to enjoy it.
That’s the grown-up version of Dazed and Confused.
Same spirit.
Different priorities.
A little more wisdom.
And hopefully, much better camping chairs.
One More Fire. One More Weekend. One More Memory.
Before you put the RV away for the season, think about taking one more trip.
Not because there’s some big event happening.
Not because you need to check another destination off your list.
But simply because you can.
Because time with your family matters.
Because old friends are worth catching up with.
Because sitting outside on a cool October evening with nowhere to be can feel better than just about anything else.
And because sometimes we all need a reminder that life isn’t just about working, paying bills, and getting through another week.
It’s about being here.
Right now.
Enjoying the ride.
Ocean City’s Coastal Escape RV Park, located in Egg Harbor Township near the Jersey Shore, is open through October 25, 2026.
If you’ve been thinking about one more RV getaway, check availability and come spend a little time doing less.
The emails can wait.
The chores will still be there.
But these moments don’t last forever.
And as a certain wise, laid-back character once reminded us:
“You just gotta keep livin’, man. L-I-V-I-N.”
Alright, alright, alright.
See you around the campfire.
